045 - Alma 43 - Social Manipulation / From Now On...
Thursday, August 6, 2020 - Alma 43 - Social Manipulation / From Now On...
Those that know me, know that I was not raised with a musical theater background, yet I have matured in my tastes over the years. In my early years it was the Los Angeles based 93 KHJ Top 40 hits combined with whatever late 60's and early 70's rock and roll was on my brother Jimi's turntable. Yes, I often failed to return his tuner to the FM dial on his massive receiver amplifier, and this drew his ire often. That was a primary drawback of his sharing a bedroom with his 7-year younger brother. Yes, I was the younger one that was listening to "Brandy, you're a fine girl," while he was blasting Alice Cooper's "School Out Forever!"
Now I find myself looking around at the angst of the young people and the masterminds tweaking their thoughts to rile them up against the establishment. Yes, I watched the Salt Lake riots as the well intentioned were being manipulated by the professional organizers. I watched them as they apparently staged a major beating injury where the injured was drug to the side with a staged photo op and the police tried to rescue and help him. This ploy was foiled as the injured man acted as though he was being detained by the police and he then broke free and ran away acting scared to death. The footage amazed me as I realized that there were professionals among the well intentioned masses making this march turn sour, violent, and completely alter the focus of the event.
Of course, it led me to the Book of Mormon where Alma and his sons preached the true word of God to thwart the evil designs of the wicked. In Alma chapter 43, I was vividly reminded of our current violent protest movement era amidst this Covid-19 backdrop. My feeling is that there is so much good in people as a whole, yet we need to be able to identify where we are being manipulated and stay on track in our good efforts. What should be our primary goals?...
Alma 43:9 - And now the design of the Nephites was to support their lands, and their houses, and their wives, and their children, that they might preserve them from the hands of their enemies; and also that they might preserve their rights and their privileges, yea, and also their liberty, that they might worship God according to their desires.
Yes, we need to watch carefully the evil designs that would strip away our rights to worship freely while defending our lands, houses, wives, and children.
And while I re-read these verses of scripture, I was reminded of my experience with the movie, "The Greatest Showman" with Hugh Jackman. I remembered watching the video of the pre-approval video of their presentation of the material to the studio heads that would have the decision to green-light their project. It took 8-months to arrange and when the day approached, Hugh alerted the producers that he had just had skin cancer surgery and would not be able to sing... What, the star of the show could not sing for the execs? And that leads us to an incredible video now found on YouTube that I think all should enjoy.
Hugh Jackman was there and under singing restrictions. He was ordered by his surgeon not to sing, yet the moment was just too powerful...

SOCIAL MANIPULATION - Salt Lake City Protest - 6:45 PM
This short video clip really bothers me. As I watched this originally back on May 30, 2020, I was glued to my TV as I switched back and forth from channels 2, 4, 5, and 13. CNN was way too busy with other major cities to cover our local drama, so I stayed tuned to the four local biggies. A curfew was being announced for 8PM after a couple of cars were burned to the ground and then it happened. I watched the peaceful protesters being agitated by a darker and more sinister violent element. I happened to be on KSL Channel 5 when they switched to this odd scenario close to the burning car where the man yelled "All Lives Matter!" and then he was verbally attacked. He foolishly got out of his car brandishing a bow and arrow and threatened those nearby, to which they beat him, overturned his car, and then they burned it to the ground.
WHY AM I BOTHERED?
Watch the footage and see what is actually taking place. There is an injured man being drug away from the crowd, whether for safety or better photo op lighting, it still remains unknown. Just for fun, count the amount of cameras nearby.
- 13-SECONDS - I count 8 people, one is injured. One is in a mask and yellow reflective vest with a digital 35MM. A black shirted woman has her cell phone camera also getting the event.
- 30 -SECONDS - We see 3 police and 8 more people swarm to the victim. Try to count all of the cameras, including a professional TV/Movie style shoulder camera. Yes, there are clearly 6 cameras and one movie film camera documenting the action.
- 40-SECONDS - What I do not understand is why the 3 men start to drag the injured man towards the police. Was he in danger? He certainly does not want to go towards them and he must be drug into the arms of the officer.
- 1-MINUTE - The injured acts as though he is being mauled by the police officer, breaks free of the helping hold, and then scurries to freedom as though he was never really that injured to begin with.
IN SUMMARY - I still feel as though this scenario was instigated for photo ops during the protest. It seems completely choreographed, and that still really bothers me. By the 1:25 mark there are just way too many professional grade cameras documenting the action. The photographers are in safety vests, black shirts, and red shirts. I felt then that myself and all those watching, were being manipulated by professional protesters and that this was greatly diluting the message that prompted the protest in the first place... And I do not like being manipulated!
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?

Now reflect upon an incredible chapter of the scriptures found in the Book of Mormon in Alma chapter 43. Most concentrate on the rising up of Captain Moroni, yet overlook the conditions in the community that brought about this righteous 25 year old who led his people to battle in defense...
9 And now the design of the Nephites was to support their lands, and their houses, and their wives, and their children, that they might preserve them from the hands of their enemies; and also that they might preserve their rights and their privileges, yea, and also their liberty, that they might worship God according to their desires.
These are all righteous causes. I think about those that went out to support the righteous causes in the SLC protests. And then I watched the changes taking place among the protesters as a more evil element was taking over. I watched closely, looking for signs of social manipulation. Much like Zarahemnah, I watched for bigger concealed motives to take over...
7 Now this he did that he might preserve their hatred towards the Nephites, that he might bring them into subjection to the accomplishment of his designs.
8 For behold, his designs were to stir up the Lamanites to anger against the Nephites; this he did that he might usurp great power over them, and also that he might gain power over the Nephites by bringing them into bondage.
I encourage you to read the 54 verses of Alma 53 looking for guidance on how to fight for what is right. When is it okay to fight? How should one prepare? What are the keys to leading this fight? And what are pure motives?
